Supermarket fuel price war sparked by Sainsbury’s

Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has sparked a fuel price war as other forecourts follow suit.

From today, Sainsbury’s has slashed its prices by up to five pence a litre for petrol and diesel.

Calderdale drivers can now expect to pay 124.9-pence a litre for petrol and 128.9-pence for a litre of diesel at the Halifax store.

After Sainsbury’s made the announcement, a price war was sparked with supermarket giant Asda quickly following suit with a national price slash of one and two pence on its petrol and diesel at 124.9-pence per litre and 128.9-pence per litre.

Forecourt prices were also down in Brighouse with Tesco charging 125.9-pence per litre of petrol and 129.9-pence a litre for diesel.

The fuel war is good news for drivers who will save on pounds when filling-up on supermarket forecourts across Calderdale.

AA spokesman Luke Bosdet said: “A five pence cut in the price of petrol, lopping £2.50 off the cost of filling a typical fuel tank, will be particularly welcome as families get back to school runs.”

The change in price reflects a drop in the price of wholesale crude oil and a strengthening of the pound following a no vote in the Scottish referendum.
